Marlene Wind appointed as Special Advisor to the EU Foreign Minister

APPOINTMENT

Professor Marlene Wind will in the future be the Special Advisor to Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, also known as the EU's Foreign Minister.

Marlene Wind

When Marlene Wind advises EU's foreign minister on disinformation and the rule of law, she can draw on a long research career with a clear focus on European law and politics. She sees it as not only academically relevant, but also as a great honor to be appointed Special Advisor to Josep Borrell Fontelles.

"I look forward to working with him on 'strategic autonomy', the rule of law, and the fight against misinformation," said Marlene Wind, who has been in dialogue with Josep Borrell on this task since he took office as Commissioner.

"His first inquiry came while I was on my way home from a lecture tour in Spain with my book 'The Tribalization of Europe - A Defense of Our Liberal Ideas', which was published in Spanish in 2019. It got me on the front page of all the great Spanish newspapers. Borrell had also read it and was excited. He wanted me to go to Brussels. As a researcher, it is always fantastic to be read and have an 'impact' through one’s research, so, of course, I was very honored about that, "says Marlene Wind.

Several of the other commissioners also have professors attached as Special Advisors, which is an external and independent role.

Continues her work at the department

The position of Special Adviser to the EU Foreign Minister can be compared to being appointed a sage – for the EU.

"When I speak publicly in the future, it will still be as a professor and as an expert. I am not employed to represent the EU or the Foreign Minister, but I must, in my capacity as a researcher and expert, contribute with input to the work on the EU's foreign policy strategy,” explains Marlene Wind.

She will, therefore, continue to work as a professor at the Department of Political Science and head of the Centre for European Politics and be affiliated with the research center iCourts at the Faculty of Law as a professor. She is also a continuing member of the Advisory Board of the European Think Tank and the Board of Directors of the European University of Florence. She also continues as a regular columnist in Berlingske.
