Rebecca Adler-Nissen forsker i international politik, diplomati og EU's udvikling. I øjeblikket med fokus på forholdet mellem fortrolige internationale forhandlinger og offentigheden, euro- og retssamarbejdet, de danske og britiske euro- og retsforbehold, Brexit, fleksibel integration samt EU's fælles udenrigspolitik og diplomati. Teoretisk fokus på IP-teori, international politisk sociologi, the practice turn, stigma, normer, Pierre Bourdieu og Erving Goffman samt feltarbejde og digitale og antropologiske metoder i International Politik.

Rebecca Adler-Nissen leder det ERC-financierede projekt DIPLOFACE: Between Confidential Negotiations and Public Display (DKK: 11,5 mio), hun er forskningskoordinator for International Politik og er desuden viceleder af projektet Images in International Security. Rebecca Adler-Nissen er desuden i styregruppen for Copenhagen Centre for Social Data Science (SODAS) ved det Samfundsvidenskabelige Fakultet.

Hun har været visiting scholar ved Centre for International Security Studies (University of Sydney), Centre for International Peace and Security Studies (McGill University/Université de Montréal) og European University Institute og arbejdet i Udenrigsministeriet med bl.a. forberedelser til det danske EU-formandskab og Det Europæiske Råds møder. I 2015 modtog hun Nils Klim-prisen og i 2016 Det Kongelige Danske Videnskabernes Selskabs Sølvmedalje.
